Maybe it is because they are upside down and backwards? On several occasions in the U.S. Lines (A.P. Line) "fast packets" (Victory ships) , and in a navy destroyer we had to radically change course to ease the strain. It is not the sea but the schedule that  causes the damage. Most, not all, but most storms can be minimized if one is not trying to make a schedule or follow a track. Few Captains have that authority but if they do, casualties can be minimized. One pays  either in delayed arrival or ship damage.  It is better one arrive late and ready than to arrive and not able to function.
