For a Matson job you need to join a union which is one reason why sailing a rust bucket is a good first choice. Not that the unions are bad, just there is some merit in getting some experience first.

I should have said the "players don't change" because, you're right, many of the names have changed.

I've been ashore for 10 years now, but last time I sailed Matson 3/M jobs were only available off the board at MM&P, so joining a union was the only option to get one. Has that changed???

And who says the names don't change? Polar Tankers was ARCO Marine when I graduated! :)

I'm glad you included number 6. Nothing is more dangerous than a master who has only sailed on one type of vessel. Competence does require a broad range of experience and should be a prerequisite for the job.
